Karolinska Institutet, a medical university in Sweden, has started to open up Biomedicum – an ultramodern, purpose-built facility for experimental medical research. It is said to become one of Europe’s largest laboratories. And its sterile central is equipped with Getinge autoclaves and washer-disinfectors.

The experimental research at Karolinska Institutet is growing, and so is the need for more advanced and modern laboratories. To tackle this challenge the university is building a brand new laboratory called Biomedicum. Although the laboratory is located on the other side of the road from Karolinska University Hospital, it will literally have a direct link in form of a skyway overcrossing the road and leading directly into the hospital’s clinical research environment.
With its 65,000 square meters Biomedicum is said to become one of Europe's largest and most modern laboratories occupying over 1,600 scientists and support staff. Departments that move into Biomedicum are Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology, Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Physiology and Pharmacology, Neuroscience and Cell and Molecular Biology.
Getinge is one of many suppliers who is part of delivering products and solutions to Biomedicum which is aiming at enhancing conditions for world class research as well as contributing to the development of Stockholm Life – a hub for life science – as one of the world's leading life science regions.
“We have installed four autoclaves and two CM320 multi-chamber washer-disinfectors that are now validated together with the customer”, says Björn Asking, Project Manager Global Sales who is coordinating large installation projects on the Swedish market.
He explains that a Getinge design team has worked with the architects at Karolinska Institutet to create the best possible workflow throughout the sterile central to make sure that the chemical equipment quickly gets cleaned and sterilized and ready to use again.
“Now that Biomedicum has opened we will keep providing service and safety inspections on the Getinge products. We have the right resources, on the right locations, to solve the customer’s service requests rapidly. It’s natural for us to make sure we are able to stand by our customers every step of the way – from design, throughout the installation process – and then continuing to provide the service they need”, says Björn.
